Martial Arts in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty are a type of skill used to deal damage to Enemies and Bosses in combat. These skills are typically very flashy and are stronger than standard attacks but consume the Spirit gauge with each use. Some Martial Arts have additional properties such as being able to hit multiple opponents at once or hitting a single opponent multiple times while others have a movement component that allows players to more easily close the distance with an opponent, or disengage from them instantly with a strategic retreat. Martial Arts skills are found on Melee Weapons, with each weapon type having their own set of different skills.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Martial Arts Mechanics Overview
Equipping & Using Martial Arts
Martial Arts cannot be equipped manually. Instead, they are an intrinsic property of Melee Weapons. Each Weapon comes with at least one Martial Arts skill, with rarer weapons having up to two. Martial Arts skills. Martial Arts on looted Weapons are randomized based on a pool which varies with each weapon type.
It is currently unknown if Wo Long will include a mechanic that will allow players to select which Martial Arts to have on their weapons, but based on the game's trajectory of following in Nioh's footsteps, it is likely that this will be available in the full release via some form of equipment crafting or upgrading.
Martial Arts can be used by pressing R1 + ▢ or R1 + △ (Playstation) / RB + X or RB + Y (Xbox)
Martial Arts & Spirit Consumption
Each Martial Arts skill uses a certain amount of Spirit to cast, denoted by the icon and a numerical value on the weapon's info page. While the Spirit mechanic in Wo Long is not as restrictive as energy resources in other similar titles, there are still certain key mechanisms that can improve or limit your ability to use Martial Arts.
The Spirit Gauge is a fluctuating resource that powers your abilities. It starts off in the neutral state and can be raised into the positive range by landing basic attacks on enemies. Conversely, it can be pushed into the negative range by performing Spirit-based abilities such as dodging and deflecting, using Spirit Attacks, Martial Arts and casting Wizardry Spells. When you are at the lower-end of the negative range, you risk being staggered by an enemy's attacks. Being too far in the negative range will also prevent you from using Martial Arts skills if there is not enough leftover Spirit to meet the requirement.
However, when you are in the positive range, using Spirit-based abilities will consume Spirit to empower the ability. This extends to Martial Arts as well, by significantly increasing their damage dealt. Therefore, it is of great advantage to players to first raise their Spirit Gauge towards the positive end before unleashing Martial Arts skills in order to maximize their damage potential. Spirit will slowly return to neutral after a while of not performing any Spirit-based moves, regardless of whether you are in the postive or negative range.
Reducing Spirit Consumption for Martial Arts
The amount of Spirit consumed by Martial Arts can be influenced by many different factors such as Special Effects found on Weapons or Armor. However, the easiest way to reduce your Martial Arts Spirit consumption is by investing in the Fire Virtue which will also increase the rate at which you gain Spirit by landing basic attacks.
Another factor that will substantially affect your Spirit Consumption for Martial Arts is the total weight of your equipped Armor. Being at certain thresholds of your current Max Equipment Weight will affect your character's mobility and other parameters. This is known as Encumbrance Rate. There are three categories of Encumbrance and depending on the Proportion of your total Armor Weight vs. your Max Equipment Weight, you are either at Low Encumbrance, Moderate Encumbrance or High Encumbrance. How these three states affect Martial Arts is as follows:
- Low Encumbrance (At or below 29.9% Max Weight) - Your Spirit Consumption is at its normal, listed rate.
- Moderate Encumbrance (From 30.0% to 69.9% Max Weight) - Your Spirit Consumption for Martial Arts is increased by 1.25x
- High Encumbrance (From 70.0% to 99.9% Max Weight) - Your Spirit Consumption for Martial Arts is increased by 1.5x
For example, the Glaive's Flying Dragon Martial Arts skill consumes 400 Spirit at the Low Encumbrance state, 500 Spirit at Moderate Encumbrance, and a whopping 600 Spirit at High Encumbrance. Therefore, it is best to maintain a lower encumbrance rate if you wish to use Martial Arts frequently.
